Sergeant Major Steven M. Burkett
SgtMaj Burkett enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1994 and attended Recruit Training at Parris Island. Upon graduation, he was meritoriously promoted to private first class. In 1995, PFC Burkett reported to Marine Air Support Squadron 1, Cherry Point, NC. In 1996, he was meritoriously promoted to corporal.
In 1997, Cpl Burkett reported to Marine Security Guard School in Quantico, Virginia and was subsequently assigned to MSG Detachments Paris, France and Ankara, Turkey. While on MSG Duty, he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant.
In 2000, SSgt Burkett reported to Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany Georgia. He served as the as the G3 Assistant Operations Chief as well as the chief instructor of the Corporals Leadership Course. SSgt Burkett attended the Career Course and graduated as a distinguished graduate.
In 2003, SSgt Burkett reported to the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy in Kaneohe, HI. He served as Supply Chief, Instructor and Deputy Director. GySgt Burkett attended the Advanced Course at Quantico, VA and graduated as the Honor Graduate as well as the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Writing Award recipient. In 2005, he was named the Academy’s Instructor of the Year and was the winner of the Elihu Rose Award, which designated the Marine Corps University’s most outstanding enlisted educator.
In 2006, GySgt Burkett reported to CSSG-3 at Kaneohe Bay, HI. He deployed as an IA to Iraq with 9th Engineer Support Battalion as H&S Co GySgt. Upon returning, he deployed to Mongolia on the Marine Enlisted Liaison Development Exchange Program. While in Kaneohe Bay, GySgt Burkett completed AWS phases I and II as well as Command and Staff College at the College of Continuing Education.
In 2008, 1stSgt Burkett reported to 1/11, 1stMarDiv at Camp Pendleton, CA. During this tour, he deployed on the 11th MEU with BLT 2/4. In 2010, 1stSgt Burkett reported for assignment at Marine Corps Embassy Security Guard Region 2 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. During this tour, he attended the Senior Enlisted PME in Quantico, Virginia. In 2012, 1stSgt Burkett reported to Marine Corps Security Force Regiment as HQ Regiment 1stSgt.
In 2013, SgtMaj Burkett reported to Marine Corps Security Force Battalion Bangor, WA. In 2015, SgtMaj Burkett reported to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. In 2016, SgtMaj Burkett deployed and served as the Senior Enlisted Leader for Joint Task Force Al Asad, Iraq. In Sept 2017, SgtMaj Burkett reported to the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group. In July 2018, SgtMaj Burkett graduated from National University with a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in Management. In May 2019, SgtMaj Burkett reported to his current assignment as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader at Joint Task Force, Guantanamo.
SgtMaj Burkett’s personal decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation with four gold stars in lieu of fifth award and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award.
